ʿAdnānعَدْنَان
About
The ancestor at whom the Prophet's ﷺ genealogy is conventionally stopped. Tradition reports that the Prophet ﷺ traced his line as far as ʿAdnān and no further, and the genealogists hold that the names above him, back to Ismāʿīl, are not reliably known. The Northern Arabs, the ʿAdnānī tribes, take their name from him; his son Maʿadd continues the line toward Quraysh.
The name
From the Arabic root ʿ-d-n, 'to settle, abide'; the derivation is traditional.
