About
An uncle of the Prophet ﷺ, whose given name was ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā; the kunya Abū Lahab, 'father of flame', came from his glowing complexion. He opposed his nephew from the first public call: when the Prophet ﷺ gathered Quraysh at al-Ṣafā to warn them, Abū Lahab answered, 'May you perish!' (Bukhārī). Sūrah al-Masad (111) condemns him and his wife, making him the only Makkan opponent named, by his kunya, in the Qurʼan. He died shortly after Badr.
