About

A prophet praised in the Qur'an as a man of truth and patience whom Allah 'raised to a high station.' Tradition counts him among the early descendants of Ādam and associates him with knowledge and the pen.

The name

Often connected to the root d-r-s, "to study" — tradition associates him with learning and the pen.

The story, as the Qurʼan tells it

The callNamed among the prophets as a man of truth.
19:56
وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًۭا نَّبِيًّۭا
The testCounted with Ismāʿīl and Dhū al-Kifl among the patient.
21:85
وَإِسْمَٰعِيلَ وَإِدْرِيسَ وَذَا ٱلْكِفْلِ ۖ كُلٌّۭ مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
The outcomeAllah raised him to a high station.
19:57
وَرَفَعْنَٰهُ مَكَانًا عَلِيًّا

The lessonTruthfulness and patience are themselves a rank with Allah, even when the Qurʼan tells us nothing else of a life.

19:56-57

وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًۭا نَّبِيًّۭا

21:85-86
