About
Son of Nizār and father of Ilyās, the eponym of the Muḍar tribes, one of the two great Northern Arab groupings. From him the Prophet's ﷺ line descends through Kināna and Quraysh to Banū Hāshim, the chain named in a ṣaḥīḥ hadith: the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah chose Kināna from the sons of Ismāʿīl, Quraysh from Kināna, Banū Hāshim from Quraysh, and himself from Banū Hāshim (Muslim). Tradition calls him Muḍar al-Ḥamrāʾ, 'Muḍar the Red'.
The name
From the root m-ḍ-r, 'sour', as in soured milk; tradition says he was fond of it.
