About
Son of ʿAdnān and father of Nizār, the second name in the Prophet's ﷺ line as the genealogists recite it. Little is remembered of him beyond his place in the chain: the genealogists name him as the link between ʿAdnān, where the line is conventionally stopped, and Nizār, whose sons became the eponyms of the great Northern Arab tribes, and the Northern Arabs are often called Maʿadd after him.
The name
An ancient Arab name whose derivation the lexicographers dispute; some connect it to the root ʿ-d-d, 'to prepare'.
