About
Son of Khuzayma and father of al-Naḍr, and the eponym of Banū Kināna, the tribal grouping from which Quraysh themselves descend. He is the first ancestor after Ismāʿīl named in the ṣaḥīḥ hadith of the chosen lineage, in which the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah chose Kināna from the sons of Ismāʿīl, Quraysh from Kināna, Banū Hāshim from Quraysh, and himself from Banū Hāshim (Muslim). Through him the line passes from the wider tribes of Muḍar into the ancestors of Quraysh.
The name
Kināna means 'quiver', the case that holds arrows.
