About
Son of Murra and father of Quṣayy, in the Prophet's ﷺ line immediately above the man who gathered Quraysh into Makkah. Some genealogists give his given name as Ḥakīm, with Kilāb as a byname; tradition explains the byname by his fondness for hunting with dogs. After his death his widow remarried and took the young Quṣayy to Syria, which is how his son came to be raised away from Makkah.
The name
Kilāb, 'dogs', the plural of kalb; by tradition a byname from his hunting with dogs, his given name being Ḥakīm.
