About
An uncle of the Prophet ﷺ and full brother of his father ʿAbdullāh; his own given name was ʿAbd Manāf. When ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib died he took the orphaned boy into his house, and later brought him along on a trading journey to Syria. As chief of Banū Hāshim he stood by his nephew after the call to Islam, sheltering him against Quraysh through the years of the boycott. His death, in the year remembered as the Year of Sorrow, removed that protection. Father of ʿAlī and Jaʿfar.
