About
Son of Hāshim and grandfather of the Prophet ﷺ, chief of Banū Hāshim in Makkah. His given name was Shayba; he was called ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib because his uncle al-Muṭṭalib brought him from Yathrib and people took the boy for his slave. He re-dug the well of Zamzam, vowed to sacrifice a son and redeemed ʿAbdullāh with a hundred camels, and faced Abraha in the Year of the Elephant, the event of sūrah al-Fīl. He raised the orphaned Prophet ﷺ until his own death, when the boy was about eight.
The name
'Slave of al-Muṭṭalib', a name given in error when his uncle al-Muṭṭalib brought the boy from Yathrib; his given name was Shayba.
Shaybat al-Ḥamd — the gray hair of praise, by tradition from a streak of white hair at birth
